Understanding Your Fireplace Pilot Light: A Guide From The Chimney Care Company
If your gas fireplace isn’t lighting properly or won’t stay lit, the pilot light could be the issue. This small flame plays a big role in the operation of your appliance. Knowing how it works – and what to do when it doesn’t – can save you time and stress.
What Is a Pilot Light & What Does It Do?
The pilot light is a small flame that stays lit continuously to ignite the burners in your gas fireplace when you turn it on. It’s typically found near the main burner and is connected to a thermocouple or thermopile, which helps control the flow of gas. When functioning properly, it ensures your fireplace starts up easily and runs smoothly.
Should the Pilot Light Stay on All Year?
There’s no hard rule – some homeowners choose to turn the pilot light off in warmer months to save on gas and reduce wear on components. Others keep it running year-round to prevent moisture buildup or insects from entering the gas lines.
How Do You Relight the Pilot?
Each fireplace model is different, but most follow this basic process:
- Turn the control knob to “OFF” and wait a few minutes to let any lingering gas dissipate.
- Switch to “PILOT” and press down the knob to start the gas flow.
- Push the ignition button – or use a lighter if there’s no ignitor – while holding the control knob in.
- Keep holding the knob for 20–30 seconds after the pilot is lit, then release slowly.
- Turn the knob to “ON” and operate the fireplace as usual.
NOTE: Check your fireplace’s manual for model-specific instructions.
What if the Pilot Light Keeps Going Out?
Here are a few common causes:
- Dirty or clogged pilot assembly. Dust and debris can block the flame or interfere with the thermocouple.
- Malfunctioning thermocouple or thermopile. If these components fail, they won’t detect the flame correctly and will shut off the gas.
- Drafts or moisture. Strong downdrafts or excess moisture in the chimney can extinguish the flame.
- Gas flow issues. Low gas pressure or a closed valve could prevent the pilot from staying lit.
